days of the week

The days of the week in Spanish are lunes, martes, miércoles, jueves, viernes, sábado, and domingo. Unlike in English, they are not capitalized unless they start a sentence, and they are masculine nouns (e.g., "el lunes"). They are derived from the Latin names for celestial bodies: the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and the Sun (Lord's Day). When talking about a specific day, use the article "el" (for singular) or "los" (for plural). If you want to say something happens *on* a specific day, you simply use the article; you do not need a preposition like "on." For example, "I work on Mondays" becomes "Trabajo los lunes."
