jiayou
jiāyóu
Literally meaning "to add oil," this is the most common way to say "good luck," "go for it," or "keep going" in Mandarin. The mental image is that of refueling a car, providing the necessary energy for someone to keep pushing forward toward their goal. It is highly versatile and used in almost any situation where someone needs encouragement. You can use it when a friend is studying for an exam, when an athlete is competing, or even just to offer moral support during a tough day at work.
